Consultations

When decisions need to be made about your client’s re-training or work transition plans, a consultation with us can expedite the process. Discussions may revolve around your client’s current situation and special circumstances, and questions about realistic occupational goals or skills upgrading may be addressed. We use our experience and expertise to comment on the likelihood of success and the time frames needed to reach those goals.

Assessments

Formal assessments are a vital part of the VR process. Our assessments document vocational interests and aptitudes along with academic skill levels. The report can include sample NOC (National Occupational Classification) codes. We offer a variety of assessments as described below.

  1. Vocational Interest and Aptitude Assessment
  2. Academic Skills Assessment
  3. CanTEST and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Level Assessments
  4. Canadian Language Benchmarks© (CLB) Level Assessments
  5. Computer Skills Assessment
  6. GED Placement Test
  7. Dragon Naturally Speaking Assessment

All assessment reports are written in clear and plain language and are a practical tool for VRs meeting with clients. They include priorities for upgrading (if applicable) and realistic time frames for goals that have been identified by the VR. We are always available to answer questions about our reports and recommendations.

Assessments are available in-person for clients in the Winnipeg MB or Kenora ON areas. In special circumstances, assessments may be done in other urban locations or on-line.

Workshops

VRs can help clients to accelerate their skills upgrading by referring them for our workshops. Clients become more comfortable within a small-group learning environment (two to four people) and focus on developing skills in a short -term and cost-effective time frame. We offer a variety of workshops as described below.

  1. Academic Prep Workshops – for clients who need to do some preparation before taking college courses, occupational training programs, high school courses, the Mature Student High School Diploma or the GED.
  2. Test Preparation Workshops – to help clients prepare to write tests such as trades exams, the professional drivers’ license test, occupational tests, the CanTEST, CELPIP and IELTS English tests.
  3. Computer Skills Workshops – to help clients learn how to use Windows, the Internet, Email and MS Office programs.
  4. Learning/Study Skills Workshops – for clients to improve their learning ability and get ready for the classroom learning environment or on-line courses.

Workshops are available in-person for clients in the Winnipeg MB or Kenora ON areas. They are also available as on-line webinars, and in special circumstances can be offered in other urban locations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does my client need to improve their learning skills before taking this course?

This depends on the type of course they are taking. Some courses require a lot of learning from textbooks, some have comprehensive final exams, and some are on-line courses. Our Learning/Study Skills Assessment will show whether your client’s skills are satisfactory for the course.

How long would it take my client to get ready to write the entrance test for a Customer Service program at our local college?

It depends on your client’s current level of reading and writing skills. Most entrance tests require a Grade 10 level, so if your client has been out of school for a long time and you need to know their current skill level, we can provide an Academic Assessment that indicates their grade level and the best approach for preparing to write a college entrance test.

I have a client whose second language is English. Can you tell me if their English skills are good enough to take a two-week security guard training program?

We have worked with many people who are getting ready to take security guard training. Success in programs like this relies on strong listening and reading skills. A client must be able to understand the instructor and to read the training manual. We can assess your client and let you know how they compare to others who have successfully completed the security guard training program.

Does my client need to improve his math skills before taking this course?

This depends on the type of course he is taking. Some courses require strong algebra skills, while others focus on practical math situations. Our Academic Assessment will determine how well your client’s math skills match the requirements of the course.

Do you think a 2-year college program would be too intensive for my client?

There are a number of factors to consider. For example, how much home study is required in the program?  Is there a hands-on learning component in the program, or does it rely on strong academic reading and writing skills?  In our Consultation, we can discuss these factors with you in relation to your client’s special circumstances and let you know how they compare to others who have been successful in similar programs.

My client will be returning to work, but she has no computer skills at all. What are the options for her?

We find that most clients are able to learn basic computer skills no matter how limited their prior knowledge may be. Some can function in a classroom environment and some are more comfortable in a small-group setting.  We can provide a Computer Skills Assessment that helps plan the most suitable option.

How long would it take my client to be ready to write the GED?

In our experience, many clients can prepare to write the GED within three months. Our GED Placement test will provide you with targeted, detailed information regarding GED subject areas to focus on and estimated time frames for completion.
